BrandStar Entertainment - The Balancing Act on Lifetime: How many of us are on the computer typing away then find ourselves using the spell check “just in case.” BrandStar Entertainment’s The Balancing Act on Lifetime welcomes Marie Rippel, author and developer of “All About Spelling,” a comprehensive program to help kids and adults learn how to spell.
BrandStar Entertainment – The Balancing Act on Lifetime: After winning a spelling in second grade, it was a big deal for me– and today I still believe spelling matters.
Marie: It does matter. A friend of mine emailed me and said she said I “defiantly” want this. I puzzled over that word a bit then realized she meant “definitely.” She just flipped a few of the letters and it changed the entire meaning. Society judges people based on how well they can spell, like classroom teachers or employers—so spelling DOES matter.
BrandStar Entertainment – The Balancing Act on Lifetime: Are kids failing the grade when it comes to spelling?
Marie: Spelling isn’t taught in the same way it was taught years ago. So schools have even dropped it from the curriculum and not as much emphasis is placed on it. Some kids pick it up naturally—but others really struggle.
BrandStar Entertainment – The Balancing Act on Lifetime: Marie joins BrandStar Entertainment’s The Balancing Act on Lifetime to talk about a program that can help. It’s called “All About Spelling.” What exactly is it and how does it work?
Marie: “All About Spelling” is a multi-sensory spelling program that teaches using sight, sound and touch. We use letter tiles to demonstrate the concepts, we have built in review and it can be used by all ages.
BrandStar Entertainment – The Balancing Act on Lifetime: Now we’ve seen an example of how you would use this book and it’s visual.
Marie: But, every lesson has 3 parts, there’s also the New Teaching Review and Practice. I’ll show you a part of the New Teaching.
Marie: Here, we have the word GIVE. There’s a rule in English that English words don’t end in “V” so we add the silent “E.”
BrandStar Entertainment – The Balancing Act on Lifetime: Now this is something that my children had a bit of an issue with the sound of the letter “K.” They’d always ask… why “CK” or “K.”
Marie: That’s a common problem because they both say the sound of the letter “K.” Here we have the word snack—and there’s a rule that says that after a short vowel, we use “CK” and after everything else, we use the “K.” We have a consonant in the word “mask” for instance—so we plug in the “K.”
BrandStar Entertainment – The Balancing Act on Lifetime: Your program has 7 levels from kindergarten to high school. Is it hard to teach?
Marie: Not at all. The lessons are scripted to that you know exactly what to teach every step of the way and you’ll know exactly what to do. One concept is taught at a time and there’s teaching tips built right into the lessons. It’s pretty easy.
BrandStar Entertainment – The Balancing Act on Lifetime: How much time would you dedicate for something like this?
Marie: I recommend 20-minutes a day. 20-minutes can make a difference. Tens of thousands of people of all ages have learned to spell with this program, even those with special needs. It’s something you can do at home, or even in school. Another great benefit is that while they’re learning to spell better—they’re learning read better too.
BrandStar Entertainment – The Balancing Act on Lifetime: If you’re a mom and your child is struggling, even if you’re a tutor anybody can get through it. If you’d like more information on this great spelling curriculum, go to allaboutspelling.com.
